Thank you very much Herb. This is the central ring of stones, and along with the other stones ths roughly forms the shape of a celtic cross. To the east of the central stone there is a chambered cairn where human remains were found. The island has a number of these sites, so I imagine it must have been quite an important area.

Thank you very much Gudrun - my husband said exactly the same thing about the 'saluting' stone! You would not be disappointed, - I loved the time we spent on Lewis and Harris. - it was far too short though. There are a number of sites with standing stones there, - so much history and beautiful beaches too. Have a good weekend and stay safe and well.

The central stones form part of what is roughly the shape of a celtic cross and just to the east of the central stone a burial chamber was found, although this was thought to have been added a bit later. What surprised me was that there are a number of standing stones sites around here so I imagine it must have been quite an important religious area.

This stone circle forms the centre of what is roughly the shape of a celtic cross. Late neolithic, they were the focus of religious activity during the bronze age. To the east of the central stone there is a chambered burial cairn where human remains were found, although this is believed to have been added at a later date.

This is just one of several site around here, albeit the biggest so I would think the island was of great religious importance at this time. This stone circle forms part of a formation that is roughly the shape of a celtic cross. Just to the east of the centre stone a chambered cairn was discovered that held human remains, although it appeared to be a later addition to the site.

Honestly Maurice it is a holiday I will never forget. The island is beautiful and I would love to go back there some time.
