Ja, man könnte es fast meinen: Fangarme wie ein Tintenfisch, dazu die exotische Farbe. Aber ein Tintenfisch auf dem Waldboden und dazu noch mit einem abstoßenden grässlichen Aasgeruch? Bei näherer Betrachtung sieht man, dass dieses Gebilde ein Pilz ist und zwar der Tintenfisch-Pilz (Clathrus archeri, Syn.: Anthurus archeri), der mit der Stinkmorchel verwandt ist. Wie viele andere Pilze auch wächst er unbemerkt mit seinen Pilzfäden unterirdisch und lebt von totem organischen Material, um bei bestimmten Wetterbedingungen (warm, feucht) seine auffälligen Fruchtkörper oberirdisch zur Vermehrung zu bilden. Der Aasgeruch lockt alle möglichen fliegenden Insekten an, welche die Sporen des Pilzes verbreiten. Näheres im Wikipedia-Artikel. Der Tintenfischpilz wurde Anfang des letzten Jahrhunderts aus Australien eingeschleppt.

Like many other mushrooms, it grows unnoticed in the underground with its mycelium and lives on dead organic material in order to form its conspicuous fruiting bodies above ground under certain weather conditions (warm, humid) for reproduction.
