In einem Käfig gefangen - Trapped in a cage

The red, cherry-sized fruit of the chinese lantern (Physalis alkekengi) is hidden in an initially green, then orange-red lantern-like, paper-like cover that gradually turns brown. In winter, this sheath then disintegrates and its supporting veins remain. Now you can also see the red berry inside. Lampion flowers can become a stubborn "weed" in gardens where they find good conditions. The green parts of the plant are poisonous, the edibility of the berries is not certain. The similar-looking fruits offered in the shops are those of the Cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana), which can be eaten safely.
The photo was taken in my garden with one of the last chinese lantern plants that survived the winter. The "offspring" are already developing.
