Akureyri, das Wirtschaftszentrum von Nord-Island, ist mit etwa 18500 Einwohnern die grösste Stadt Islands ausserhalb der Region um Reykjavik.

Heute lebt die Stadt vorwiegend vom Tourismus, der Fischerei und Hightech-Industrie. Die Universität Akureyri mit den Fakultäten Gesundheitswissenschaften, Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften sowie Wirtschaft und Wissenschaft wurde 1987 gegründet.

Akureyri erreicht man ab Reykjavik über die Ringstrasse nach ca. 400km – sofern man die Ringstrasse im Uhrzeigersinn fährt. Gegen den Uhrzeigersinn sind es ca. 900km!

In Akureyri und Reykjavik gibt's ab und zu solchen Begegnungen. Erstaunlich, dass diese alten Fahrzeuge so nah am salzhaltigen Wasser nicht mehr Rost aufweisen ...
