COMMERCE STREET
|
|
|
|
I'm a poet of the lean city
of the city that doesn't
walk
I'm of this flatness
I'm from the lives' violence
poet of the city that sinks houses
and people
I'm from the whore city that only has
surface
everyday I wake up naked and narrow
like a commerce street

RUA DO COMÉRCIO
Sou poeta da cidade magra
da cidade que não
caminha
sou dessa planicidade
sou da violência das vidas
poeta da cidade que afunda casas
e pessoas

TO YOU
|
|
|
|
By the flurries of a continuum line that's life,
In the love lapels in navigation and in the impossible checkmate,
In the promise slowness and other aprils,
(the tireless alchemy of gestures that I still remember of you)
I fill the dream in a lost milky balloon,
I reopen the old time pearls,
I model the efficencies,
And I slowly die behind the stage,
Lacerating myself.
///
Rasgo-me.

Masterful map

the sea is a star, the wind is a cloud
the sky is red, the dawn is a colour
the blood is orange, the apple is an animal
the nightingale is a fruit, the land is an orchard
the fire is female, the woman is a light
the wine is a feeling, the love is a vintage
the poetry is another sun, and this poem is a masterful map

GOOD FRIDAY

At grandpa's house
we fell into silence
at three in the afternoon,
I and he,
in the usual room.
Before we began to fall,
as a footnote,
he did provide me an explanation
about suffering.

SEXTA-FEIRA SANTA
Em casa do avô
caíamos no silêncio
às três da tarde,
eu e ele,
na sala do costume.
Antes de começarmos a cair,
dava-me uma nota de rodapé,
uma breve explicação
do sofrimento.

DEEP FIELD
|
|
|
|
A moth's wing stammered in the air vent
I unzipped on one side of the bell tent.
Tea lights spent their carbon in a lantern
that panicked stars onto the canvas.
Outside, deep field, you pointed at a moon
so real your finger came back dusty.
We stared like telescopes at our past -
that dark spot encrusted with galaxies.
///
CAMPO PROFUNDO
A asa duma traça estampada no respiradouro

FIRST YEAR

Oh, Tom, I'm wearing my lucky pants in the reading room
but you still turn away. Come back. I'd like one night with you.
I'd like every slow day in your arms. I can't read this Bible;
I'm taking my time but the lines run away into the rain.
I'm a cat on an ice box longing too much to touch your hair.

PRIMEIRO ANO
Regressa. Gostaria de estar uma noite contigo.
Gostaria de passar os dias lentos nos teus braços. Não posso ler esta Bíblia;

There are days
that are dying.
I desire the night
where there are no voices.
If things continue like this
I still learn
how to climb the rooftops,
to share
the cats' loneliness.

A blind knot in the morning
embroidery. And the tenderness
interrupted by the undo
of days until that look,
after all,
where it waited,
tail outside, by death:
goes under the skin
(one of the oldest)
the line that
no longer holds us,
cut it with the last kiss,
to topple a heart
more and more inside out.

Um nó cego no bordado
de manhã. E a ternura
interrompida pelo desfazer
dos dias até esse olhar
depois de tudo,
onde aguardava,
cauda de fora, a morte:
passa sob a pele
(uma das mais antigas)
a linha que já
não nos prende,
cortá-la com o último beijo,
rematar um coração
cada vez mais do avesso.

INTRUSION

|
|
|
Sun comes through the room window
a light ball falls
on the bed's foot
I kick her against the wall
I expel the night towards darkness' infinity
dazzled by the full light
I hold the life
that was a dream even now.

agarro a vida
que agora mesmo era um sonho.

THE MINCH
|
|
|
|
What you distrust is often wrong
I understand that now
Your tattoos so prominent
I thought I could spot them
Through your clothes
Talk of jewelry, mention of
A gold dagger, a woman's dagger
A fisherman found in his net
Toward the close of the day, the fish vanished…
Potatoes
Buckies and spoots
But no one eats limpets…
Rain the sound of dropping dead insects
No detail uninspected
For a moment, a spit of light
On the woodpile, tawny birch,
Fawns parading through fern---
The wind was bitter from the east,
Your body on mine, pressing down,
A floral remenbrance…
Drugstore corridors…
A streetcar
Rambling past the avenue
Over the cliff and into the ocean---
But to answer, I always
Thought of you as Scottish
Because you look Scottish
///
O MINCH
Aquilo de que desconfias está frequentemente errado
Percebo isso agora
As tuas tatuagens são tão proeminentes
Que pensei poder identificá-las
Sob as tuas roupas
Batatas
Veados e pássaros
E ninguém come as lapas…

SEAHORSE
|
|
|
|
minuscule
& moving through
a limpid stillness
as if
under remote
divine control
the seahorse
upright glides
stops
taxis backwards
then sinks
dangling down
to a web of weeds
before tilting
(feigning the faintest
inebriation)
& turning
almost motionless
on its axis
a Nijinsky
of the lagoon
such ciphering strangeness
such slow-floating gentleness
(tail an uncurling fern
trickling over stones)
creatures our dreams
swims into
our mythologies
not a fish twisting & thrashing
in crackles of blinding colour
but a delicate balance balancing
nothing against nothing
an equilibrium
contained
in a sea of happiness
///
CAVALO-MARINHO
minúsculo
movimenta-se pela
límpida quietude
como se
sob um divino
controlo remoto
o cavalo-marinho
desliza na vertical
pára
recua
depois mergulha
estaciona numa teia
de ervas daninhas
antes de se inclinar
(fingindo uma leve
embriaguez)
e virar-se
quase parado
no seu eixo
um Nijinsky
da lagoa
esse código estranho
essa lenta flutuação gentil
(a cauda uma samambaia enrolada
a gotejar sobre as pedras)
preenche os nossos sonhos
nada para
as nossas mitologias
não um peixe contorcido a debater-se
em crepitações de cor inebriante
mas um delicado balanço balanceado
nada contra nada
um contido
equilíbrio
num mar de felicidade

THE MONEY'S PAW
|
|
|
|
I went to the wall one day,
went to the machine,
punched my card in and waited
for money to come out.
Waited. Watched the screen.
Do you need more time?
the screen asked,
the machine screen asked.
No! I answered,
I want money
in multiples of twenty.
I want Ready Cash.
But the machine gave no Ready Cash,
asked me only:
Do you need more time?
Over and over I punched it,
swore, paced, tapped buttons,
glared at the person
staring over my shoulder.
All the machine would say was:
Do you need more time?
Disgusted, I took my card
and left it, the machine.
On reflections
I realized I missed my chance.
What have I done?
I could have said: Yes. Yes!
A hundred years,
a thousand years,
in multiples of twenty.
It does no good,
though I go back daily
to the same place, the same machine,
slide my card in like a lover's tongue,
wait for it to ask me.
It never asks.
All it gives
in multiples of twenty
is money. Money.
Money.
///
A GARRA DO DINHEIRO
Um dia cheguei-me à parede,
fui à máquina,
meti o meu cartão e esperei
que o dinheiro saísse.
Esperei. Olhei para o ecrã.
Precisa de mais tempo?
perguntou o ecrã,
perguntou o ecrã da máquina.
Não! Respondi,
quero dinheiro
em múltiplos de vinte.
Quero Dinheiro Vivo.
Mas a máquina não me deu Dinheiro Vivo,
simplesmente me perguntou:
Precisa de mais tempo?
Meti o cartão repetidas vezes,
praguejei, pontapeei, bati nas teclas,
olhei para a pessoa
a espreitar pelo meu ombro.
Tudo o que a máquina disse foi:
Precisa de mais tempo?
Contrariada, tirei o cartão
e deixei a máquina.
Reflectindo
percebi que perdi a minha oportunidade.
O que deveria ter feito?
Poderia ter dito: Sim. Sim!
Cem anos,
mil anos,
em múltiplos de vinte.
Nada bom,
embora volte diariamente
Nunca pergunta.
Tudo o que dá
em múltiplos de vinte
é dinheiro. Dinheiro.
Dinheiro.

I've been bathing,
when the body
remembers.
Even so,
the fly
always lands
by the silence hour.
I must have forgotten
a fruit inside me,
a rotten organ
since the last Spring
when you said you would come.
Secretly
I still worship
at the still life altar
in which love has become.
I demand some calm
lent by cigarettes.
Teeth hate this,
but the tobacco' smell
stuns insects
that don't pay rent
in my skin.
The extended left arm
out of the bed
keeps the body orbiting.
I react to yesterday´s plane
crashes.
I'm tired of using the body,
I no longer check the engine oil,
I have no one who borders flowers
in place of wounds.
///
Tenho tomado banho,
quando o corpo
se lembra.
Ainda assim,
a mosca
pousa sempre
na hora do silêncio.
Devo ter esquecido
dentro de mim um fruto,
um órgão podre
da primavera passada
em que disseste que virias.
Secretamente
ainda faço o culto
ao altar da natureza morta
em que se tornou o amor.
Peço alguma calma
emprestada aos cigarros.
Os dentes odeiam isso,
mas o cheiro do tabaco
atordoa os insetos
que não pagam aluguer
na minha pele.
O braço esquerdo estendido
para fora da cama
mantém o corpo em órbita.
Refaço-me dos acidentes aéreos
de ontem.
Estou cansado de usar o corpo,
já não verifico o óleo do motor,
já não tenho quem borde flores
no lugar das chagas.
