At the B and B

The mystery is that there is no mystery,
Says the retired detective
Tamping his pipe ---
His father had lied to him
About honesty…
Otherwise, the room
Is sidetracked into seasonal detail,
Water dripping from eaves
Chipmunks begging for birdseed
After all these years, declares the hostess,
I'm afraid I still prefer Pissarro
Over Cézanne. She dabs
Her lips with a delicacy…
The howl of November approaches,
Dies back, twists wild roses
Along the stream bank
Such are the ravages of introspection,
She explains to the detective ---
Someone had lied to her too
///
At the B&B (*)
O mistério é que não há mistério,
Diz o detective reformado
Enchendo o seu cachimbo ---
O pai mentiu-lhe
Sobre a honestidade…
Por outro lado, a sala
É marginalizada pelo detalhe sazonal,
A água a pingar dos beirais
Os esquilos a pedirem alpista
Depois de todos estes anos, declara a dona do hotel
Temo ainda preferir Pissarro
A Cézanne. E limpa
Os lábios com delicadeza…
O uivo de Novembro aproxima-se,
Morre de novo, agita as rosas bravas
Ao longo da margem do riacho
Tais são as devastações da introspecção
Explica ela ao detective ---
Também alguém lhe teria mentido

Ants toil ceaselessly
for the survival of underground empires
not later they will be overwhelmed by the elephant's kick
or drowned by the flood.
Earth is also a greedy and corrupt anthill
where we work less and less and pollute more and more
not later the planet will be destroyed by the human footprint
or by catastrophic waters and glorious fires.

UNREAL HOUSE

abandoned house,
beds unmade all day,
no food on the table.
He's in his room dreaming
with his brother Nietzsche,
sh's in the next room sewing,
fantasising and talking to herself
about wrongs she suffered
and no one listens to her, only winter
with its icy flowers. And humanity?
Once upon a time, in a distant country.
And hope?
It's the baby girl.
Every so often the smallest thing
turns them into wild animals.

CASA IRREAL
casa abandonada,
camas todo o dia por fazer,
nenhuma comida na mesa.
Ele está no quarto a sonhar
com o seu irmão Nietzsche,
ela esta na sala vizinha a costurar,
fantasiando e falando consigo mesma
dos erros de que foi vítima
e ninguém a ouve, só o inverno
e suas flores geladas. E a humanidade?
Era uma vez, num país longínquo.
E a esperança?

THE REVOLT OF THE BIRD HUNTERS
|
|
|
|
It's a crime to disregard the well-compilled
laws
enacted by the general assembly of many lined birds
on the perch.
Seeing them from underneath or in the TVnews
it seems that democracy works
nobody flies without everyone doing it
no one chirps or loses the peep without looking to the side
however
seeing better
all are shaking a lot and flap their hurried wings
but nobody does anything
nor leaves the perch.
Until the shots of poachers
far away scare them
and the birds flock disbands
give two or three wide flights over the power
and suddenly comes back to it.
Harmony temporarily lost
remakes
the freedom of those who remain
is the increasing hunger
and the inept revolt of dreaming
that never comes to an end.
///
A REVOLTA DOS CAÇADORES DE PÁSSAROS
É crime o desprezo pelas leis bem compiladas
e promulgadas
pela assembleia geral de muitos pássaros alinhados
no poleiro.
e a passarada debanda
A harmonia temporariamente perdida
refaz-se
a liberdade dos que ficam
é a fome que aumenta
e a inepta revolta do sonho
que nunca chega ao fim.

IN DEFENSE OF NOTHING

I guess these trailers lined up in the lot off the highway will do.
I guess that crooked eucalyptus tree also.
I guess this highway will have to do and the cars and the people in them on their way.
The present is always coming up to us, surrounding us.
It's hard to imagine atoms, hard to imagine hydrogen & oxygen binding, it'll have to do.
This sky with its macular clouds also and the electric tower to the left, one line broken free.

some clouds
have taken the shape of stairs.
no, it's not the spiralling tongue of corners.
it's more like a ladder,
the thing with steps between its two legs
that leaned on the wall my dad painted
with the flesh of his cheekbones raised
as if he was smiling
and his eyebrows condensed
as if he was angry.

e as sobrancelhas eriçadas
como se estivesse zangado.

LONELINESS

So many stones are thrown at me,
They no longer scare.
Fine, now, is the snare,
Among high towers a high tower.
I thank its builders: may
They never need a friend.
Here I can see the sun rise earlier
And see the glory of the day's end.
And often into the window of my room
Fly the winds of a northern sea,
A dove eats wheat from my hands…
And the Muse's sunburnt hand
Divinely light and calm
Finishes the unfinished page.

SOLIDÃO
Tantas pedras me são atiradas,
Não mais me assustam.
Bem, agora, é a armadilha,
Uma torre alta entre torres altas.
Agradeço aos seus construtores: nunca
Eles precisem duma amiga.
Daqui posso ver o sol nascer mais cedo
E a glória do fim do dia.
Divinamente leve e calma
Acaba a página inacabada.

I have irrefutable poems
proving
God's schizophrenia
we are unreal
delirious
agonizing apes
crawling into darkness
death is a portentous catapult
with a tremendous metaphysical power:
throw us beyond of nowhere
sometimes
inside myself
the star that I beheaded
talks to me

lança-nos para lá do nada
fala comigo
por vezes
o astro que decapitei
dentro de mim

When I have fears that I have to cease
|
|
|
|
Before my pen has gleaned my teeming brain
Before high-pilèd books, in charactery,
Hold like rich garners the full-ripened grain;
When I behold, upon the night's starred face,
Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,
And think that I may never live to trace
Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance;
And when I feel, fair creature of an hour!
That I shall never look upon thee more,
Never have relish in the faery power
Of unreflecting love!---then on the shore
Of the wide world I stand alone, and think
Till love and fame to nothingness do sink.
///
Seguros como celeiros cheios de grão maduro;

THE LAND
|
|
|
|
In his workshop
The memory of bolts and sheet metal,
Reflections from the meadow,
His daughter saying, yes, everything needs work,
Cleaning up and cleaning out ----
Nick had made windmills for orchards
To combat frost. No frost this morning though it was calm,
The land ripening down to mounds of aging clinkers
Above Mill Creek. I'd forgotten about clinkers.
We strolled there. You could hear steelhead thrashing
Up the slight rapids through a tangle of shrub elm
And box elder. Nick had looked old when he was young
Then he didn't change much. My uncle's farm was down
The road where storage units now reside, row upon row,
Seen from a distance they look like barracks.
He was John Bircher while Nick was anti-war.
Did you know my father well? We were in sports, I said.
There used to be workhorses here, I told her, this is where
They retired. I thought I saw smoke then I didn't.
My shoes were sopped with dew. She wore wellies.
And reminded me again she was interested in selling
The half-section with small out-buildings, the faded barn,
The dark-slung house that resembled what you see
In rural Georgia surrounded by pecan trees. Here there
Are apricots. It's so confusing, she said, searching for advice,
Frowning, resembling her mother briefly,
A falcon streakig overhead under the steady
Warming of morning, a quiver crossing her lips…
///
A TERRA
Conheceste bem o meu pai?
Ela usava galochas.
