NATIONAL DAY OF PORTUGAL, 10th June
ELEGY
|
|
|
|
Too proud to die, broken and blind he died
The darkest way, and did not turn away,
A cold, kind man brave in his burning pride
On that darkest day. Oh, forever may
He live lighttly, at last, on the last, crossed
Hill, and there grow young, under the grass, in love,
Among the long flocks, and never lie lost
Or still all days of his death, though above
All he longed all dark for his mother's breast
Which was rest and dust, and in the kind ground
The darkest justice of death, blind and unblessed.
Let him find no rest but be fathered and found,
I prayed in the crouching room, by his blind bed,
In the muted house, one minute before
Noon, and night, and light. The rivers of the dead
Moved in his poor hand I held, and I saw
Through his faded eyes to the roots of the sea.
Go calm to your cricifixed hill, I told
The air that drew away from him.

ELEGIA
Orgulhoso por morrer, morreu desesperado e cego
Da maneira mais sombria, e não fugiu,
Homem frio, amável e corajoso no seu ardente orgulho
Naquele dia fatídico. Oh, possa para sempre
Viver despreocupado, finalmente, na última colina
Percorrida, e lá crescer jovem, sob a relva, apaixonado,
Do meio-dia, e noite, e luz.

With my hands impregnated
of body cream
I walk against the sun.
Sand burns my foot plants.
At the sea surf area
my walk is cooler

passeio contra o sol.
O areal queima-me as plantas dos pés.

LOCAL HISTORY

In the liquor store one is enchanted by a print
Of bears holding each other's arms, heads slung up
Singing, dancing about a hooded fire --- Tony
Behind the counter, has never danced ...
Just as Michelangelo tussled with the shape
Of a Venus, his impulse was to attach
Breasts to men ---
But Gene no longer has an interest in any kind of art.
My wife won't allow him in the house
Since he tumbled down the stairs --- Gene who spent
The last war sitting on the bridge in Sault Ste. Marie
Guarding the locks, numb fingers on an icy machine gun ...
Married a woman
Who became an eminent actress after she left him ---
Gene says, how hairy she was in reality. What he
Described of their intimate life
I once found fascinating ---
A dead branch like a claw.
Nothing so studied as something honored.
As we pivot in the park around the Civil War monument ---
This isn't Florence by any means ---
My wife squares her lips,
How wondrous is it to be discreet, the satisfactions
In maintaining a confidence ...
Sparrows flitting into glass,
Clutter of bodies on wet pea gravel ---
Those days when so much rain made the ground squeak
By itself
///
Atrás do balcão, nunca dançou ...
Pardais flutuam no copo,

IVY DRIP AT WARRISTON CEMETERY
|
|
|
|
I glimpse more light in the east
and stranger animals in the wood.
When you gave me your hand, you said
"Don't leave---" and then put on the hood.
A headstone, with a beast,
turned petrified your hair.
Years on, quite still, you have not ceased
and, bats eat moths, I've understood
I must not always leave you dead
in the mould of the marvellous wood
but search again for the painted stair
up which I saw you lightly tread.
///
O GOTEJAR DA HERA NO CEMITÉRIO DE WARRISTON
Vislumbrei mais luz a leste
e estranhos animais no bosque.
Quando me deste a tua mão, disseste
"Não partas---" e cobriram-te.
Uma lápide, com um monstro,
petrificou o teu cabelo.
Assim mesmo, anos depois, não morreste
e, diabos me levem, percebi
que não deveria deixar-te morto
no bolor do maravilhoso bosque
mas procurar de novo a escada colorida
que te vi a subir suavemente.

ENDEARMENT
|
|
|
|
No need to speak on regret.
In that shimmering dress you're its wholehearted double.
Tender as feathers.
It's not easy to give up what passes for love
faced with a wall of pink morning light filtered through stands
of mid-winter birches.
You might say it was good
but it couldn't go on. Not in the way that a river goes on -
resigned to the sound of resistance.
///
TERNURA

LABYRINTH
|
|
|
|
You look at the distance that fills the labyrinth
Of your own body
And you don't feel its complicity,
Arbitrary you think of
Your own body
As a line, one perch,
On the little toe,
So long,
Certainly you feel the pain and the brightness of a thoughful body,
Distracting you from the wind living outside,
The desire, the shadow, the desert,
Of this body, accomplice, anodyne,
So thoughtful, mirror body.
///
LABIRINTO
Olhas a distância que preenche o labirinto
Do teu próprio corpo
E não o sentes cúmplice,
Arbitrário te surge o pensar
O teu próprio corpo
Como uma linha, um poiso,
No dedo mínimo do pé,
Tão longo,
Decerto sentes a dor e o brilho, desse corpo tão pensado,
Distraindo-te do vento que vive fora de ti,
O desejo, a sombra , o deserto,
Desse corpo, cúmplice, anódino,
Tão pensado, corpo espelho.

Forest Fires

LOVE is a fire we can see;
it's a wound that destroys and kills;
it's a belief that wins in spread;
it's a never contentement with itself;
it's to want to be free by choice;
it's to serve who overcome, death.

O AMOR é um fogo que arde e se vê;
é ferida que destrói e mata;
é um cuidar que ganha em propagar-se;
é um nunca contentar-se de si próprio;
é querer estar livre por vontade;
é servir a quem vence, a morte.

to bring a lot of rain
slight and persistent
to replenish the moisture of soil

even in the doomsday
it's urgent that forest fires

AUTUMN

A touch of cold in the Autumn night -
I walked abroad,
And saw the ruddy moon lean over a hedge
Like a red-faced farmer.
I did not stop to speak, but nodded,
And round about were the wistful stars
With white faces like town children.
///

OUTONO
Um pouco fria a noite de outono -
Andava a passear no estrangeiro,

THE PRAYER
|
|
|
|
When the moon fell out of the sky
I prayed to the sun, like an Inca,
asking the great god to find his pale
godson and bring him back up high
to light up my nights. Streetlights
didn't do it, and never reached the sea
or the mountains, the two terrains that
formed the backdrop to my existence.
I shaped my prayer into a quiet song
that I intoned to a sunflower that
grew in an earthenware pot in my
garden, all the while watched by a black
cat that belonged to my neighbour,
and when I'd finished, the cat and I
watched the moon rise like a football
and regain its rightful place in the sky.
///
a iluminar as minhas noites.
Moldei a minha oração numa música tranquila

GENESIS AND DEVELOPMENT OF A POEM
|
|
|
|
Neighboring voices coming from childhood
through the accent ot tose who speak aside
the inexorable sun over the waters
hunches coming with the wind
the old fortress the bay vision
the full tide the afternoon the clouds the blue
memory of all this in another summer another place
and by my visibly victimized look
everything possible at the table and at the ball-point pen
at the sheet of paper sorry my friend at the bar
loneliness assured by the crowd
the light the time the vacations the sunday
the stone cross the square the car
all this doesn't matter only matters
a few and simple words remaining of all this
that set all this: «suspended time» or «quiet sea»
or «I fel good» or --- what do I know? --- «someone died»
///
GÉNESE E DESENVOLVIMENTO DO POEMA
a maré cheia a tarde as nuvens o azul
memória disto tudo noutro verão noutro lugar
e pelo meu olhar visivelmente vitimado
tudo possível pela mesa e pela esferográfica
pelo papel desculpa ó minha amiga pelo bar
a solidão assegurada pela multidão
a luz a hora as férias o domingo
o cruzeiro de pedra o largo o automóvel
tudo isto não importa importam só
as mínimas e únicas palavras que me ficam disto tudo
e tudo isto fixam: «tempo suspenso» ou «mar imóvel»
ou «sinto-me bem» ou --- que sei eu? ---«alguém morreu»

ETERNAL LIFE
|
|
|
|
There's a long time since God has left us.
He created a son
Jesus Christ
crucified by hatred
in the vain attempt to preach love.
His only legacy
was the promise of a better world
cosmic
and eternal
for lovers of blood
body
mind
and sperm that
after all
make us smile and sublimate the death: love.
The only justification for life!...Will it be?

HAPPINESS
|
|
|
|
As soon as I slept Poet rose up and stood over my body.
He saw me weak and weird with metallic blue toenails
tiny toucan beaks that wanted to fly off into the universe.
I made it out of the window. I stretched out in a treetop to rest.
The stars were inquisitive eyes. I was plankton in a cave I was
a pack of lies I was being somewhere else I was finding answers
Poet craved. I woke up a stranger to my body surrounded by
feather boas reindeer moss a handful of the afterlife.

FELICIDADE
As estrelas eram olhos inquisitivos.

|
|
|
|
Here I'm barefoot before God.
I have lived a lifetime to get here
and, nonetheless, God asks me to continue ---
asks in silence.
I walk unhurried, rush has finished and
secrets are over. Lies
evaporated.
The words failed
to hide me. Each word is
a step.
At every step my feet create roots,
the soles of my feet sink
on this sacred ground.
Where are you? I said goodbye, I left you far away,
I covered this distance looking for you ---
I found you at last.
I walk unhurrIed, I carry the weight
of childhood and architecture.
God burns before me and I know now
my name doesn't protect me.
///
WAT PHO
Eis-me descalço perante Deus.
Atravessei a vida inteira para chegar aqui
e, no entanto, Deus pede que continue ---
pede em silêncio.
Caminho sem pressa, acabou a pressa e
acabaram os segredos. As mentiras
evaporaram-se.
As palavras deixaram de conseguir
esconder-me.
Despedi-me, deixei-te lá longe,
fiz esta distância à tua procura ---
encontrei-te por fim.
Caminho sem pressa, carrego o peso
da infância e da arquitetura.
Deus arde à minha frente e sei agora
que o meu nome não me protege.
