Brunahraun

Brunahraun
Brunahraun is lava from the northern Laki crater row that flew down to the coast following the the valley of Hverfisfljót river.
The larger lava field Eldhraun www.ipernity.com/doc/523247/44215764 was created by flows from the southern crater row down Skaftá river valley.

In the backgound are the cliffs of the former coastline. The lava itself is very difficult to cross because of the many cracks and sharp edges and anyway you shouldn't because the vegetation is easily damaged and takes decades to grow back.

The lava is colonized by Racomitrium moss and wild thyme.

Thus really is a remarkable landscape, Gudrun. I've never seen anything like it before. The nearest we have to this is the landscape of Clints and Grykes of the limestone pavements in Yorkshire. I love the bravery of the tiny thyme plant.

Thanks a lot, Amelia! The Yorkshire limestone is fantastic, I loved Malham:-)
Thyme is a very hardy plant, there's lots of it in Iceland and it's the reason Icelandic lamb is so tasty....

Gudrun club has replied to Xata club
Thank you so much, Isabel! No, these are thymus praecox, Lambagras is more hardy, it even grows in cold corners of the highlands!

And now I must go and have a look at your Iceland photos, I don't think I have ssen them all before;-)

The flowers of wild thyme are a charming contrast
to the rugged lava landscape and its magical green.
Simply beautiful, Gudrun!

Gudrun club has replied to * ઇઉ * club
Thanks very much, * ઇઉ * ! The moss looked so green because of lots of rain, after dry periods it turns silvery grey. The flowers always are a surprise, they are survival experts:-)

Such a fascinating image Gudrun. The cliffs look amazing and the lava flow has created lots of different shapes all covered in moss, which I like. The colour palette is lovely.

Two super PiPs as well...........the Thyme looks really beautiful against the moss and I also like the moss and cracks in the lava in the second PiP, with the cliffs and lovely blue sky in the background.

Thank you so much, Keith! I could have spent more time in this place, the shapes were fascinating and the small flowers were quite a surprise.
