The Campbell Gas Engine Co Ltd.

The Campbell Gas Engine Co Ltd.
Machinery at Oficina Salitrera Santa Laura, abandoned saltpeter works in the Atacama desert. Together with neighbouring Humberstone, Santa Laura has gained UNESCO world heritage status in 2005.

"Humberstone and Santa Laura works contain over 200 former saltpeter works where workers from Chile, Peru and Bolivia lived in company towns and forged a distinctive communal pampinos culture. That culture is manifest in their rich language, creativity, and solidarity, and, above all, in their pioneering struggle for social justice, which had a profound impact on social history. Situated in the remote Pampas, one of the driest deserts on Earth, thousands of pampinos lived and worked in this hostile environment for over 60 years, from 1880, to process the largest deposit of saltpeter in the world, producing the fertilizer sodium nitrate that was to transform agricultural lands in North and South America, and in Europe, and produce great wealth for Chile. Because of the vulnerability of the structures and the impact of a recent earthquake, the site was also placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger to help mobilize resources for its conservation."

Herzlichen Dank, Uwe! Ich vermute, geklaut.... Das wurde 1960 stillgelegt und dann hat sich jeder bedient, dazu Erdbeben und das Klima.... Der Welterbestatus war die letzte Rettung, vieles ist einsturzgefährdet.

I suspect that remaining equipment would have also disappeared long ago, if it was not so heavy!
As it is, it makes a very interesting photo, with or without your helpful documentary, Gudrun.

Thanks a lot, Neil! I suspect you are right;-) Many of the wooden parts were looted which poses a problem for the stability of the buildings.

How fascinating, Gudrun! I think that big earthquake was in 2007, wasn't it? I was just looking at some small cities on Street View last night and they're still not recovered. They lost many of their colonial era buildings.

Many thanks, Diane! Yes there was one in 2007- I was in Patagonia at the time! This was "only" 6,7 and the epicentre was further south. I think the earthquake mentioned was the 2005 Tarapacá quake which at 7,8 was much stronger and had its epicentre nearby. But Chile has so many quakes that they actually use two terms- sismo and terremoto. Sismos are just rumbles, to qualify as terromoto it must be pretty big;-)
The colonial buildings are always the ones to suffer, the Spanish and Brits had no idea how to build earthquake proof...

Herzlichen Dank, Leo! Diese Welterbestätte lohnt sich, leider ist sie für viele Chile-Touristen etwas ab vom Schuss.
