Blue-tailed Bee-eater (Merops philippinus)

Blue-tailed Bee-eater (Merops philippinus)
The lovely Blue-Tailed Bee-Eater - Merops philippinus - is amazing at catching bees, dragonflies, wasps and hornets in mid air as it swoops and flies at speed. They breed in sub tropical countryside where they prefer open areas like parks, scrubland, rice fields etc. and love being near bodies of water, in fact these are all places where their preferred food is most prominent. They are most often seen either in flight or perched on wires or in treetops where they are in perfect positions to spot food flying past and instantly take flight. Males and females look alike so it is very difficult telling them apart. This one was seen in Khao Lak, Thailand.
