. . . The demands of aristocratic patrons, who wished to build a comprehensive library very quickly, produced a new revolution in copying practice. The new humanist rounded script, based as they thought on the authentic Roman (but, as we have seen, in fact on Carolingian minuscule) was a beautiful lettering, but required care and precision. For the rapid copying of many texts, scribes began to develop a cursive script of linked letters, which did not require the quill to be lifted from the page as each letter was completed. This was the origin of italic, the second great calligraphical legacy of Florentine humanism to the culture of print.
