Wearable glasses

Wearable glasses
Salvino D'Armate is most often credited with the invention of the first wearable eye glasses around 1284.

Early Glasses

The first wearable glasses known to history appeared in Italy during the 13th century. Primitive glass-blown lenses were set into wooden or leather frames (or occasionally, frames made from animal horn) and then held before the face or perched on the nose.

Giordano da Pisa’s account (written in Italian in 1306) of the invention of spectacles, as described in a sermon he had heard: ‘It is not yet twenty years since the technique of making spectacles, which enable one to see well, was found. It is one of the best techniques and one of the most useful that the world knows, and it is just a short time since it was found: a new technique that never existed previously. And the preacher said: “I saw the person who first found it and used it, and had a conversation with him.” Evidently, Giordano has no word for ‘invention’ or ‘discovery’, so he relies on a paraphrase, ‘a new technique that never existed previously’

I often wonder how the poor and visually impaired managed in their day to day lives in times gone by. Everything is out of focus for me without glasses....I certainly would have struggled!
