What about the many less exotically special things in our environment, things that we don’t think were owned by presidents or painted by Vermeer -- the sight of a freight train or a pickup truck or a mountain stream; the sound of the foghorn or a crickets at night or birds in the morning? Here it’s much harder to establish a link between essence and affect. For one thing, it’s not so obvious that people think of these things as having essences. After all, people don’t offer to pay exorbitant sums for them, and don’t break into tears at the thought of parting with them on grounds that they’re irreplaceable. And it’s not so obvious that people have distinctive feelings upon seeing things as mundane as trains and trucks. ` Page 158
