The first to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery were four thousand Union soldiers who fell during the 1864 Battle of the Wilderness, the opening battle of Ulysses S. Grant Overland Campaign and the beginning of the end of the Civil War. The number of graves has grown with each successive war. Today, some four hundred thousand veterans lie buried on the cemetery’s six hundred and twenty-four acres. ~ Page 154
