On October 14 (1883) just after Midday, most of the men assembled outside to get the last glimpse of the sun. there was a silent restless moving through them, a low current of unease. Greely strode to the top of the hill just north of the longhouse to watch for one last appearance. He stood quiet and alone for some time, then saw a few beams bursting through the cloud cover and gleaming atop the Hogback’s snow-covered summit. He watched, awestruck, as the moving clouds, lit by the sun, seemed to catch fire with bursts of orange and red. And for a moment the orange-red rays touched down, lighting up the outlet bay and the harbor, intensified by the “rosy, curling, columns of vapor rising in the dense, cold air.” Then, as quickly as the rays had come, they transformed into a gloom that unfurled across the landscape like a flat, lead-colored gray blanket. The sun was gone, giving way to the “the long night,” the polar effect of perpetual twilight. ~ Page 35
