Combing the area for the ground and protection from the elements, the men discovered more remnants of what had once been permanent native habitation -- ancient foundation and walls of granite houses and scattered nearly the bleach-white bones of large whale, a long narwhal horn, and “a toggle of walrus ivory for dog races.” That families had once carved life from this unforgiving place gave the men a faint beam of hope in the dying sunlight. ~ Page 174
