The entire history of the Cro-Magnon was one of movement, of countless ebbs and flows across ever-changing landscapes. As the Ice Age ended and temperatures warmed, some groups stayed where they were and adapted effortlessly to new ways of obtaining food, becoming plant eaters and fishers as much as hunters. Others followed their traditional quarry northward into the still open fastness of the north, to the realm of the fast-retreating ice sheets and the meltwater likes that were to form the Baltic Sea thousands of years later. They moved northward from more-sheltered areas, from refuge like the tributaries of the Loire River, which fingered northward into the tundra.

After about 17,000 years ago, small numbers of Cro-Magnons moved into uninhabited areas, starting with the Upper Rhine Valley, then, by 16,500 years ago, heading downstream and into Belgium and southern Germany. They were following horses and reindeer herds moving into what had been polar desert. Well over a hundred stat-of-the art radio-carbon dates document these moves and tell us that the first hunting bands moved north at a rate of about a sixth of a mile (one quarter of a kilometer) a year. By 16,000 years ago, Cro-Magnon had colonized north France and northern Germany, as well as Denmark. Under two thousand years later, a few bands had hunted their way into Britain, which was, of course, still a part of the continent. The warmer temperatures of the Bolling oscillation accelerated the push. ~ Page 248
