A closer approximation to what really happens in organic nature would be to describe it as follows: life is an eminently active enterprise aimed at acquiring both a fund of energy and a stock of knowledge, the possession of one being instrumental to the acquisition of the other. The immense effectiveness of these two feedback cycles, coupled in multiplying interaction, is the precondition, indeed the explanation, for the fact that life has the power to assert itself against the superior strength of the pitiless inorganic world.
Living systems . . .continue because they obtain materials and energy from their surroundings, enabling them to do the work of rearranging their parts so as to prevent them from falling into disorder. They are able to do this because they receive from their ancestors a pattern of order, which we identify by saying that it consists of ‘information’ carried by a code….
The order of [living things] is maintained by the continual expenditure of energy in elaborate ways that counteract tendencies to degradation and disorder … Enormous amounts of information are involved in the control of living organisms. An evolution has proceeded creatures depending on more and more information have appeared. ~ Page 129
