Two central, and intimately connected, aspects of light in the hermeneutical situation are reading and relationship. Reading is the ultimate act of communication in solitude. It is also in the deepest sense a political act, binding and thrilling people who cannot see or hear of physically touch each other. “The model of true reading is. . .a political model.” Reading is an image of relationship which illumines. A book is “talisman” against death, whose classic Greek image is darkness. Within the wall of civilization, reading needs illumination. So for much of the hours we live, does personal encounter. We need light to read, to face each other. Lighting home or streets changed the polis, changed the ways human beings understood each other and themselves. ~ Page 107
