Tiny Bee on Strawberry Blossom

This morning I took my two new flowering plants out to the garden and put them in the dirt before it got too hot. After watering them, I went in and got my camera. By the time I got back, there was already a tiny beetle visiting and this itty bitty bee!

I don't know about you, but before I started taking pictures, I thought there were only two kinds of bees: honey bees and bumble bees, isn't that funny?! :D Here are some fun facts about bees that you may not know! :D

• There are over 20,000 kinds of bees all over the world!

• The smallest bee species, Trigona minima, is 5/64" (2.1mm) and the largest, Megachile pluto, is 1.5" (39 mm)

• Bees have been on this planet for over 30 million years

• Bees have a stomach for food and a special pouch for nectar, and they store pollen in leg pouches called "pollen baskets" (I prefer to call them "fat pants"! :D)

• Honey bees have barbed stingers and will die after stinging a victim from abdominal rupture. Other bees do not have barbed stingers and can sting you more than once!

• Bees are closely related to wasps and hornets but are not as venomous or aggressive (except the Africanized bees, which can be very aggressive)
