(a poor pic of) The Great American Eclipse of 2017

(a poor pic of) The Great American Eclipse of 2017
From a friend's front yard in Keizer, Oregon (a suburb of Salem). His house lay right in the path of totality, and he let us park our trailer on his lawn. I didn't realize the corona would overexpose; if I ever get a chance to try another eclipse photo, I'll stop down the exposure a couple of notches.
Anyway, the sight is definitely worth traveling to see. You can understand why the spectacle was a total(!) freakout for people who didn't know what was going on. At the point of totality, when the (dark) lunar disk is outlined by the corona, it looks as though there's a black hole in the sky where the sun's supposed to be.
The insert shows a streetlight across from the house that clicked on during totality. We also saw Venus and Jupiter, but got no pix. There's also a "ring of twilight" all around, from the sky in the distance beyond the Moon's shadow.

Smiley Derleth, Don Barrett (aka DBs travels), tiabunna and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

It really is amazing.

Its my second one (UK 1998) and if we survive the present orange idiocy... we are clost to the totality for 2024 !

Well taken indeed, Steve. I was fortunate to see a full eclipse many years ago and yes, it remains an unforgettable experience.

I did the same thing with my picture so that it came out overexposed. I overestimated how dark things would get, but I'd going into it intending to not focus on the photography, anyway, so I didn't try fooling with it. It was just something I wanted to experience. I do kind of wish I'd gotten a wider shot that included to horizon, though, as that didn't look anything like I'd expected it would look. We had a line of cumulus clouds just to our northwest that both went into shadow and came out before us, and watching the light shift there while we were still in darkness was amazing.

If I'm still kicking in '24, I'll try it again.

The corona is about as bright as the full Moon, and I _know_ how the Moon overexposes if you just try to take a shot of it, but ... Oh, well--next time!

It _is_ a sight worth traveling for. I may even try for the one in '24... ;)
