Sophie Diez by Holz
Sophie Diez, born Hartmann (1820-1887); German (mezzo-) soprano who created the role of Magdalene at the première of Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” in 1868.
In 1836 she made her debut at the “Hofoper von München” as Benjamin in Méhul’s opera “Joseph”. Until the end of her career in 1878 she was engaged at Munich. In 1841 she married the tenor Ernst Friedrich Diez (1805-1892) who also was engaged at Munich. She had a repertoire of over 300 roles (many in Bavarian and Austrian dialect) and was also a celebrated concert singer.
