Theodor Habelmann by Unknown
Theodor Habelmann (1834-1920); German tenor.
In 1856 he made his debut at the “Berliner Hofoper”. In the following years he sang at Stettin, Lübeck, Braunschweig, Zürich and Danzig. After a guest appearance in London he went to the USA where in 1871 he performed the rôle of Lohengrin in the first American performance of this opera. His most memorable rôles were Tannhäuser, Fra Diavolo, Lyonel in “Martha” and Max in “Der Freischütz”. From 1885 until 1892 he was engaged a as stage-manager at the Metropolitan Opera New York, where he was specialized in Wagner productions. From 1893 until 1902 he was engaged as chief director at the “Opernhaus von Breslau”. He then returned to the USA where he worked at the theatre. In 1920 he died at Honesdale (Pennsylvania).
