Johann Nepomuk Beck by Mahlknecht (1)
Johann Nepomuk Beck (1827-1904); Hungarian baritone who created the rôle of King Solomon in Goldmark’s “Die Königin von Saba” in 1875 at the “Wiener Hofoper. In 1846 he made his debut at the “Deutschen Opernhaus” in Budapest as Riccardo in “I Puritani”. He then had some short engagements at Hamburg, Bremen, Köln, Düsseldorf, Mainz, Würzburg, Wiesbaden and Frankfurt a.M. In 1853 he joined the “Wiener Hofoper” where he was engaged until 1885 and where he had an overwhelming career. His most memorable rôles were William Tell, Belisario, Pizarro in “Fidelio”, Alfonso in “Lucrezia Borgia”, Don Carlos in “Ernani”, Nelusco in “L’Africaine” and Peter the Great in “L’étoile du Nord”.
His son Joseph Beck (1848-1903) was also a well known baritone.
