HFF! Roadworks outside my flat.

HFF! Roadworks outside my flat.
Dedicated cycle lanes being built at the expense of parking for the residents. That's progress, I suppose. It means my girlfriend now can't park outside, but has to trawl the side streets for hours looking for a parking space. :o)

Madrid is a very dusty city anyway (due to reasons of geology), but when you add road works too ...

Here residents have to pay for the privilege of searching for a parking space- that's why many don't have cars (I walk or use public transport). HFF, Andy!

Andy Rodker club has replied to Gudrun club
My girlfriend has lived in this same parking zone for 25 years and needs her car for work. She also pays for the privilege of spending between 1/2 hour and 2 hours to find a parking space. The people who do not work long hours, or just use their car for silly things, always get the parking spaces first. That seems to me to be inherently unfair!!
I don't have a car. I teach Business English and have 5-6 classes each day in different companies all over Madrid. it would take me all the class time just to find a parking space so there is no point!
I used to like driving, even in cities, but I haven't missed it these past 6 years!
I'm all for bicycles but not when they become part of a political agenda which is what this is!

It's always most unfair on those who really need a car. I'm all for banning SUVs in town, they are mostly mums ferrying their brats around;-)

Interesting shot Andy - HFF. We have cycle lanes in many parts my area which are hardly used, many (but by no means all) cyclists tend use either the pavement or the road!!

Anyway, try and have a good weekend, Doug
6 years ago.
Andy Rodker club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
For me, the bigger issue as a pedestrian is the riding of motorbikes on the pavement!!!! It seems obligatory to park them on pavements but they often drive up to a space (or away from one) at reckless speeds!
I'm not used to it and it always annoys me! It doesn't seem to bother anyone else here!
Have a good weekend.

HFF Andy. Hope the roadworks aren't too noisy!!
I think where there are flats or apartments they should keep enough parking for cars. It can cause many problems i n the surrounding streets otherwise!!
Have a good weekend, Rosa.

Andy Rodker club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Thanks, Rosa! Difficult when everyone lives in flats here!
Madrid IS noisy! And there are always building works going on, These apartment blocks can contain 100s of flats and so there will always be a few where building work is in progress. They don't build in brick but whatever it is they do use ,it takes months to remove and the noise they make while removing old walls bit by bit is horrendous! Plus they can work until 11pm (and often work later as no-one obeys the rules!).
Have a (quiet) weekend!!!!

Fascinating image Andy...........lots to look at..!! I can imagine how busy it gets there and how infuriating the parking situation is.

The trouble is that nowadays a lot of people have 2 or 3 cars per household and most streets were built before people even had cars..!!

I'm lucky in that I live in a street with residents parking only ( but I have to pay a considerable sum each year for the privilege) - even that doesn't guarantee a parking space though.

HFF to you mate.............and have a good weekend. I hope your girlfriend doesn't have to waste too much of it trying to park up..!!
Andy Rodker club has replied to Keith Burton club
Well, Keith - it's not only when she visits me, but also daily parking at her flat! We have our own flats. I live at one end of the street you see here and she lives at the other, about 1.5 miles away. So I often go to her's. But the cycle lane construction started at her end a few months ago so she's had this going on now for a long time and it will only get worse! (And yes, she pays a lot too for this privilege!)

Hi Andy

So your planning department is as incompetent as ours!!
No coherent transport strategy.... This kind of thing only serves to move the problem somewhere else, rather than solve it. Discourage cars, fair enough, but ensure some cost effective alternative exists. In this case I don't suppose they have done that (as always).
I would hate to see your girlfriend 'trawling the side streets for hours!!"

Best Wishes & HFF

Andy Rodker club has replied to Peter_Private_Box club
The new-ish mayor is a socialist and she is resolutely anti car. I agree that cars need curtailing somehow but bikes are not the answer for many busy people.
As it happens, the public transport system is very good and affordable. But it more or less bankrupts the City council to keep it that way!
Best wishes,
Andy

I sympathise with you. Noise and dust ! Ugh ! My village is pretty quiet but the street I live in is not that wide and full of 1930's council houses whose tenants were never expected to have cars. Now most front gardens have been paved, households have two or three cars and parking creates ill feeling. Someone had their tyres slashed a few moths ago. Don't know what the answer is. If I didn't have a car I would be trapped in my house as I can hardly walk. I'd have to rely on taxis.

Great HFF shot but oh dear! I can almost hear the noise from here. Much the same problem here, - roadworks all over town, - at times it resembles a car park, - noise and disruption. Plenty of cycle paths, - but putting them in doesn't mean people are using them.
Andy Rodker club has replied to Ecobird club
The cycle path is open at the other end of the street and I pass by 2-3 times a day. Guess how many cyclist I have seen? That's right, 0. The number of wasted minutes in traffic jams caused by this (and I am talking bus rides here)? Too many to count!

What I fail to understand is despite spending a fortune on cycle lanes is why they still prefer to ride in the roadway and dodge unfilled potholes which remain untreated because all the money is spent on cycle lanes, Doh
