My climate is such that Japanese maples can get sunburned. Too high and too dry. So, mine is in a pot on the north side of the building - a high, light shade. It does very well like that, which surprised me. It does not like being pruned. I have tried to shape it a little bit, but whatever branch I cut dies by the next year!

It seems you should be fine with your low elevation and more humid air. Thank you so much, Keith.

My problem is two huge sycamore trees in my garden that block out the sunshine for most the the afternoon. I had one trimmed down a bit last year and I'm planning on getting the other done this year if I can afford it. They're very big and tree-surgeons don't come cheap!!

They charge a fortune! Understandable, it's kind of a dangerous job with fully grown trees.
