How bizarre! Not the scarecrow as such (although that is certainly odd enough) but the fact that North Americans don't often hang their washing out! In the UK it rains a lot but we still have the habit of hanging the washing outside whenever we get the chance (and frequently rushing outside to get it all back inside again as soon as it rains; we are experts at that particular skill and would be serial gold medal winners if it were ever to be an Olympic sport!)

Rural people hang their clothes outside, here, but very few suburban or city people do. I did for a few years before I bought a dryer and also hung them all over my apartment in bad weather. I am in awe of your laundry-rain-rush skills, Andy!
