South Dakota, December, 1962

South Dakota, December, 1962
At my grandparents' ranch. From left: my twin brothers, Mom, Dad, me, my uncle, another brother and my aunt. The two kiddies in red are cousins. Does anyone else remember those "circle pins?" I've got one on my collar.

The back rooms of the house were built into a bank for additional warmth in winter, cooling in summer. It was demolished by new owners about 25 years ago. I've placed the photo where the house used to be.

do you remember the gifts you received ?

No, but I do remember a few from other Christmases. We were not a lavish-gift family, and still aren't!

This is a wonderful photo Diane. You and your Mum are so alike....................like peas in a pod.

I guess we are - in that photo, anyway. Everyone tells us that, but neither one of us thinks we look alike. Oddly, Mom isn't smiling in that one, she almost always is, and not just in photos. I, on the other hand, have a somber look as my default expression. Lol!

Oh, thank you, Rosa. My vacant stare seems like a typical oldest-child's-boredom expression.

It's always surprising to me to realize that almost anywhere in the U.S. can look pretty much like anywhere else. Somehow I'd expect interior shots in a ranch in rural South Dakota to look different, but this could easily pass for a holiday family photo in my hometown in north Florida.

Don, that's an interesting observation and you're right! The bland beige of everything at that time helps to keep everything undifferentiated, too.

I was once at a party in a house in the Yukon, and the setting felt like I could have been 'anywhere USA/Canada'. To some extent I blame 'Hollywood' for creating a notion in our brains that different places are, well, going to be 'different'.

I blame Hollywood for giving the impression that all of the USA will look exciting and sparkly, like New York and L.A. Most of it looks like Terre Haute, Joplin or Turlock.

More evidence that we often think alike..... "Terre Haute" is the one I always use for describing 'ordinary America'

Oh, really? Haha! I've never even been there, it's just something about the sound of it...

I've been through there twice, there's a faded old downtown and lots of truck stops..

Really? Amazing, Leopold has been there and you, too! It's the definition of the middle of nowhere. There was a hardware/general store, grocery store and a cafe downtown. I don't know how long they lasted after the '60s. Also two bars. I worked at Cedar Pass after I graduated from h.s. and my friends and I walked to town at night to drink beer at the Cowboy Bar - the drinking age was 18, but we were 17 and the owner never asked us how old we were.
