When I was doing Geography at school in England.. we had to learn the gross national output of Alfalfa by the USA !!!!

Now they dont even teach in the USA that there is a world out there it seems !!

That's a detail that makes me smile, Pam! Americans have not been very good at geography for several generations! It's the arrogance of power. Also, it seems that once WWII was over, everyone said, "Whew! We don't have to know anything about those damned old countries anymore!" In some families, like mine, it's unacceptable to be ignorant of geography and other cultures. (But, no, I don't know the UK's output of cheddar!)

And that made me laugh.... nor do I !!!!!

And.. fairly... I know many Americans DO know there is a world out there... but the Alfalfa just took me back in time !!!

If they live in cities, they do. I forget that I live in a place where this is not the case. But, really, geography is not emphasized so much in school, anymore. I might be in the last generation to have to memorize the world map - lol! (However, it's a different world, now!)

Who needs geography when there's an app to tell you how to get from Starbuck's to the Apple store???? (Of course, it's the app's fault if it takes you over a non-existent road..)

I tend to think "serves them right, they really should use maps and be exploring the world"

Yes! A proper PAPER map gives you a mental map of where you are in relation to a broader area - not just driving directions. I couldn't have any fun wandering around without having some idea of the big picture.

That's what worries me about the current trends, a lack of curiosity about surroundings.
