and the fire goes on.....

and the fire goes on.....
Almost two weeks after the outbreak of this fire on the peat moors of Saddleworth the fire burns on. This taken from my bedroom windows at 23.15 last night also shows one of the fire-fighting appliances on its way nearer to the top, no doubt to drop off and collect more fire-fighters. This is now thought to have been started deliberately by someone with a bonfire. Copy-cat fires are also appearing in other places in the NW of England as I can testify after driving through thick smoke smog about 40 miles North of here near the moors fire on Winter-Hill. It's horrendous and very frightening Herb. If it was started deliberately, I hope they can somehow identify the culprits. You just cannot believe the mentality of such people. I hope for your sake and the whole area it is soon brought under control....Rosa.

Thanks Rosa, I believe the police are appealing for help with that and we shall wait and see what happens. I think that only heavy rain now can make any real difference. The fire service will try to stop it spreading to the other hills yest untouched.

Yes it is Malik, it has never gone out. The peat here is about 2-3 metres deep and it can all burn very slowly. Hopefully it will end soon.

The fire has an eerie fascination! I'd be standing at that window quite often to look how it's developing...

I well understand that sentiment Gudrun as I quickly run to my 1st floor bedroom window to see if I can still see flames at the onset of darkness but fortunately, just some smoke at the moment but when it gets darker....who knows.

Herb the truth is this is some thing to fear that there are people who are capable of starting fires and the destruction that is left behind.

Yarloop was a prime example removed from the map in 7 min. our best advantage is no peat here so the fires are just on the top of the ground. i understand its a great photo and sadly i have more than a few of my own but its still far better not to have any photos at all. the recovery rate of the flora and fauna is going to be a very long time but it will recover.

i certainly hope that you dont get the chance at any more photos. one of my constant dangers going out to take photos in the bush and knowing just how fast the fires move.

Thanks for all this Steve. I think they have someone now who started one of the fires at least. I remember seeing your photos, as linked here, and thinking that we are safe here but now I know otherwise. The fires near us have largely died down with very little smoke now but it is still tinder-dry and could start again very easily. We need some of your rain, we have not had any prolonged rain for two months.

The photo is reminiscent of when they used to burn stubble but that of course was controlled, without a lot of rain this could burn for months, a lot of places are having fires (including a local wood) how many are deliberate will probably never be known, unfortunately there are people with this implies to start fires

Herb Riddle club has replied to Peter Castell club
Thanks Peter, yes you are right, I remember that almost every year there were controlled fires but this is differet. As you imply and in my oppion right, there are a lot of idiots who like fires up here. We have had many cases were the fire-engines (and ambulances) were bricked as they attended large fires only a couple of miles away. - Such a pleasant community! So is life!

We can see the fires burning on Winter Hill over in Wigan Herb

Herb Riddle club has replied to Richard Nuttall
Hi Richard, I had not realised that you were so close. Yes you will see and no doubt smell the fires over near Winter-Hill. We passed near there on the M6 (twice) recently and the valleys just past the moors were chocked up with smog. Not nice!
Keep safe, Herb

A local news report has mentioned people out on the moors with a barbecue.. The stupidity of some people defies belief...
Herb Riddle club has replied to Tractacus club
Thanks George. Yes there are all sorts of reports of how there fires started. I heard that the firefighters found a new built bonfire on Saddleworth moor where they believe the fire started. There has been some arrest but I know no more. As for stupidity, see my reply to Peter above.
