Ein Sexualprotz - A sex maniac - PiP
At first glance, you might get a fright when you see this relatively small insect for the first time. A small scorpion? And with wings?
In fact, the picture shows a male of the Common scorpionfly (Panorpa communis). The supposed scorpion venom sting is the gigantic male genital apparatus with which the female of the scorpion fly (see PiP) is grabbed during copulation. The abdominal end of the female is tapered and is used as a laying tube. More information on this topic can be found in the Wikipedia article.
Scorpionflies are currently often found in the shaded areas of forest edges, often sitting on larger leaves of herbaceous plants.
