  • Fairhope, AL Substation Damaged by Cat

    - 25 Nov 2014 - 5 comments
Just saw this in the news: http://www.al.com/news/mobile/index.ssf/2014/11/cat_causes_over_60000_in_damag.html#incart_river A cat entered the substation feeding the City of Fairhope municipal utility (which is served off of a 46kV line from Alabama Power) and got on top of a voltage regulator, resulting a short circuit and quite a fire ball! Damage ended up totaling over $60,000. Here's a look at the sub before the cat event put it in the Graveyard: http://goo.gl/maps/opkmY

  • New Photos & Future Plans

    - 30 Aug 2014
I've got 42 new pictures uploading now. They include lines from Gulf Power, Mississippi Power, and some public utilities. These will be the last pictures of lines from Gulf Power for a while. Next week, I'll be doing some pictures from Florida Power & Light, followed by some utilities in Virginia. Afterwards, I plan to spend the fall season photographing lines from Connecticut Light & Power. Enjoy!

  • New Photo Albums

    - 25 Jun 2014 - 1 comment
Lately I've been embarking on a project here to organize my photos by utility, with each utility getting its own album. So far, over the past week or so, I've gotten around to about a dozen utilities, and I plan to get to some more as time goes by. I encourage you all to come and take a look at some of the new albums if you're interested in the construction from a specific utility: www.ipernity.com/doc/connecticut_power_lines/album

  • Next Week's Safari Plans

    - 14 Jun 2014 - 2 comments
I've been debating whether or not I should take a big safari through the state of Alabama next week to cover more of Alabama Power Co.'s old 4.16kV distribution. Based on the sample of photos I uploaded this week, would any of you all be interested in seeing more? Some possible destinations would include Mobile and Montgomery.

  • New Pictures

I took a little safari covering the 27.6kV system in Litchfield today. Right now, I'm in the midst of uploading 35 pictures that I took. Descriptions will be added later today. Enjoy!

  • Happenings in Burlington, CT

    - 21 Mar 2014
I took a drive around Burlington, Connecticut today and noticed a few replacements on the grid. The pole in the pictures below has now been completely replaced: Another pole has had some work done on it too. This shorter-than-usual 4.8kV distribution pole has had its crossarm replaced. That 4.8kV pole that got its crossarm replaced, by the way, is also part of the Main Street 4.8kV system. It is fed off of a 500kVA step-down transformer…

  • Big Batch of Photos Now Up

    - 21 Dec 2013
I took many pictures on yesterday's line safari, which covered the Seymour area. Come on over and give them a look! Lots of interesting construction, including a 13.8/4.8kV substation.

Made a few slight adjustments to my page here on Ipernity today. I hope you all enjoy it! I also did some updates on my secondary profile on Flickr as well, with some links to point visitors over here to my Ipernity page. A link to my Flickr page: www.flickr.com/photos/connecticut_power_lines

  • December Slowdown

    - 15 Dec 2013 - 4 comments
You all may have noticed that I have been taking fewer power line picture trips in the past week. This has been caused by a string of inclinent weather that stretched from last Monday to today, and will continue into next day or two. Lots of snow and chilly weather. Another problem is now with the recent snow storms, the Connecticut DOT has been putting down extremely corrosive calcium chloride (CaCl) salt on the roads. The temperature has also been well below freezing during this stormy coup…

  • Upcoming CL&P Substation Projects

    - 02 Dec 2013
Ran into this article on the Connecticut Siting Council's web-site today: http://www.ct.gov/csc/lib/csc/f2008/30208_cover_lr.pdf The top things on their list of planned substation upgrades that really stuck in my mind included: -"Modifying the 115kV Bunker Hill substation in Waterbury (Date to be determined)" -"Modifying the Torrington Terminal substation in Torrington (Date to be determined)" This page is over 5 years old now, so there is a good chance that the projects I mentioned…

  • CL&P Transmission Project Update #2

    - 01 Dec 2013
Took some more pictures of Connecticut Light & Power's work to rebuild 115kV transmission lines running from the Stevenson Dam to Waterbury and Watertown. The segment from Middlebury to Frost Bridge (345/115kV transmission sub in Watertown) has been completed and looks to be in operation now. New monopoles are going up for the Waterbury-Middlebury branch, and the Stevenson-Middlebury branch looks to be untouched so far. One interesting thing I noticed about the new monopoles is that they all…

  • Photo Name Updates

    - 30 Nov 2013 - 4 comments
As part of the "Fine Toothed Comb" photo update project, I am also tweaking and changing the names of the pictures to shorten and streamline them more. Names like "HELCO 13.2kV Single Phase - West Hartford, Conn. MUTUAL AID" are being changed over to "HELCO 13.2kV - West Hartford, CT (Mutual Aid). I am also in the process of changing the "Conn." abbreviation for "Connecticut" over to the shorter "CT". So keep that in mind if you're searching for a photo. I've got most of the names changed o…
