EVERSOURCE 4.8kV - New Hartford, CT
I have uploaed some photos that I took today in Connecticut. Many of them feature old poles that have been in my photostream for some time, but recent changes from EVERSOURCE Energy are evident in many of them. One interesting example is this pole here, which had a fiberglass arm replaced by a wooden arm: I have also taken and shared what may be the last pictures of this old pole: One of its glass insulators has slipped off of the wooden pin and I fear its days are numb…

  • HELCO's Goodwin Lane Substation

    - 14 Oct 2018 - 3 comments
I have some unfortunate news regarding HELCO's old Goodwin Lane substation in East Hartford, CT. This sub, which stepped 23 kV down to 4.8 kV delta for local distribution, has been placed out of service and is in the process of being dismantled by EVERSOURCE Energy. All of the old pothead risers from the two-phase era surrounding this substation are now gone: The additional 4.8 kV circuit that left the sub on aerial cable is now gone as well: It appears that EVERSOURCE Energ…

    TRM 4.16kV - Brewton, AL
I just posted up some new photographs I took of some interesting electric distribution poles in the Brewton, Alabama area. Highlights include some extremely short 24.9 kV distribution poles, two blue-bushing transformers, and some very heavy-duty 4.16 kV construction at the T. R. Miller lumber mill. Enjoy!

Gulf Power 12.47kV - Pensacola, FL
I just renewed my Club subscription, and have now uploaded some Gulf Power photos. I'm going to try and get a few short safaris in before the month ends as I have found some interesting poles I would like to share. Enjoy!

Gulf Power 12.47kV - Pensacola, FL
I just uploaded a batch of thirty pictures from my 20 May Gulf Power safari. There are some real oldies in this batch, including a few corner poles with Ohio Brass Baum Patent disks. I have also included a few "brakestompers" for your enjoyment.

  • CL&P Waterbury: S. Main St. 13.8/4.8 kV Line

    - 01 Jun 2018 - 5 comments
I have some unfortunate news to bring to you all: the beloved South Main Street 13.8/4.8 kV distribution line in Waterbury, Connecticut has met its demise. EVERSOURCE Energy has replaced every single pole on that line from 1077 to 2180 South Main Street. All the new poles feature fiberglass arms and 35 kV visetops. In addition, the 4.8 kV underbuild has been stripped from the line over the entire rebuilt span. While any removal of 4.8 kV distribution is cause for concern, the level of conc…

  • 10,000 Photos

I hit a rather large milestone today: my 10,000th photo uploaded onto Ipernity! I hope everyone has enjoyed my digital power line photos as much as I have enjoyed taking them over the past seven years. Here's the "big picture" (my 10,000th one): My 5,000th photo: And my first one: It's been an interesting journey so far, having captured electric power transmission and distribution from eighty utilities in over twenty states and provinces in North America!

  • Gulf Power To Be Sold

    - 21 May 2018 - 3 comments
I ran across this article today: www.nwfdailynews.com/news/20180521/gulf-power-to-be-sold-to-florida-power-amp-light-parent-company It appears that Gulf Power is going to be merged into Nextera Energy, the parent company of Florida Power & Light, in 2019. This will be quite an interesting development. Gulf Power, a longtime division of Southern Co., currently uses Southern Co.'s standard hardware. But if the pending sale of the company goes through, I wonder if some changes to Gulf Po…

I finally was able to get back out with my camera and photograph some lines again! This time, I got over 100 photos of Gulf Power construction in Pensacola, Florida. Some of these poles are quite early construction, featuring old Lapp multiparts and Ohio Brass Baum Patent disks. Others are Gulf Power's classic hodge-podge of armless constuction, with plenty of brakestompers to go around. I will be uploading these photos in batches over the coming week or two. Enjoy!

I just uploaded a big batch of pictures I took around Farmington, Connecticut last week. These pictures feature primarily older HELCO 23 kV construction, with a few new poles from EVERSOURCE thrown into the mix. There are also a few interesting "brakestomper" poles, such as these two: Enjoy!

  • The End of Pyrex Insulators in Connecticut

    - 02 Apr 2018 - 4 comments
I drove through Avon, CT to-day on a line safari to photograph some older 23 kV distribution from the former Hartford Electric Light Company (HELCO). While on this mission, I noticed that this old 23 kV subtransmission from the Connecticut Power Company (CP) had been demolished and removed. This line was retired when I visited it with my camera in 2011 to photograph two Pyrex high-voltage insulators that had survived on its poles. I knew of two other sites with Pyrex insulators on CP's o…

I've been a bit late in starting up 2018 as far as line safaris go, but I managed a few photos at Gulf Power's substation in Pace, FL. This station steps 115 kV down to 12.47 kV, with six circuits for local distribution. One interesting detail of this substation is the presence of unusual aqua glass post insulators, which support busbars on the 12.47 kV side. They are visible toward the back of the photograph below.

  • Old, But New

    - 11 Feb 2018
I came across a few pictures I took back in 2013 but never uploaded, until today! I hope you all enjoy them. They feature older construction from HELCO and CP in Farmington and Canton, Connecticut. Longtime followers of my photostream will be familiar with the construction styles featured in these pictures.

  • Norwich, CT Line Safari

    - 27 Dec 2017 - 9 comments
I am planning to embark on a big safari to Norwich, CT later this week or this weekend. Norwich has a municipal utility that features a lot of interesting 4.8 kV construction. If there are any specific poles you would like me to photograph around there, please post their addresses on Street View and I'll add them to my list.

  • More Good Poles in the Graveyard

    - 23 Dec 2017
I thought I would share these photos of poles that I have now determined, via Google Street View, are gone as of 2017. You all may be familiar with some of these poles, as a few garnered many views and comments when they were posted!

In celebration of the Winter Solstice, I embarked on a line safari around Bristol, CT. Highlights include some line rebuilds/pole replacements, and a few 4.8 kV distribution poles. Enjoy! In other (sad) news, one of our favorite transformer banks in Waterbury, CT is now gone:

  • Additions to the Graveyard

    - 28 Nov 2017 - 2 comments
I have unfortunately had to add over thirty pictures to the Powerline Graveyard today after seeing some rather extensive pole replacements going on in Oakville, Connecticut. A notable line to bite the dust is this early 13.8 kV substansmission line that featured unusual Westinghouse insulators: Another unfortunate pole that has now gone is this 1920s-vintage CL&P pole with PINCO insulators: The new additions to the group can be viewed here: www.ipernity.com/group/28554…
