The Lost Portrait

The Lost Portrait
On Friday I visited the Russell Cotes Museum in Bournemouth, for a talk by Charles Dickens' great great great granddaughter, Lucinda Hawksley, called "Dickens and Christmas". I knew nothing about the lost portrait, which shows him when he was much younger than the usual picture we see when he was in his mid 50's and looking even older. The story is very interesting and if you wish to know more I will leave a link. The portrait was a miniature by Scottish artist Margaret Gillies.

The 2nd PiP shows Lucinda Hawksley book signing. The main picture is best NOT viewed large, as it was taken from a screen showing the slide.

Auf diesem aussergewöhnlichen Gemälde schaut er aber fesch aus, der Charles :)
Seine Ur-Ur-Urenkelin ist sichtlich stolz auf ihn...eine schöne Geschichte und Reihe Rosa.

Yes I agree Tanja. He was writing "A Christmas Carol" at the time this was painted. I think the expressive eyes are captured so well, due of his discussions with the artist about her campaigns to combat poverty.
Wishing you a good weekend my friend.

Thank you Joe. Sometime before Christmas Lucinda is on BBC TV to talk about the portrait and Dickens Christmas, but I didn't ask which channel. Probably BBC4.
Cheers, Rosa.

I would have never recognized the young man in the portrait as Dickens, amazing!

Your portrait of Lucinda Hawksley is fantastic, a genuine big smile!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Gudrun club
Nor me Gudrun! What a lovely face he had when young.
Lucinda Hawksley was lovely. She asked if anyone had made the Smoking Bishop Christmas mulled punch, and to my surprise my daughter raised her hand and had quite a conversation about it :-)) It sounded very potent...I good job she didn't save any for me!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Edna Edenkoben club
He was Edna. The eyes are painted so beautifully. Yes it is the event I mentioned. We thought we knew all there was to know about Dickens but I was wrong; it was so good and informative and Lucinda was lovely. My daughter had heard about the lost portrait, but I didn't know about it.

We are going to visit it again sometime. I couldn't believe it was free to enter, but donations
are appreciated of course. We did pay to attend the talk though.

Thank you for your kind comments.

Quite right dear Adele!!
Lucinda was a lovely lady and we had a good chat to her.
Dickens was a handsome young man. I now have a different
picture of him in my head. Such a great story of the portrait.

A wonderful experience for your Rosa! I rather like the slight softness of the fine portrait, to me it reinforces the fact that it is actually a painting.

Enjoy your day, Doug

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
I knew nothing about the lost painting before this Doug. It is a large miniature and beautifully painted. I have since read more about it and Philip Mould, the art expert was involved it verifying it. Thank you for your kind comment and yes, it was a wonderful experience.

Sunday greetings,
Rosa.
