Montacute House

Montacute House
I have often read that there is a perfect light of the "golden hour" for photos, which lasts for about an hour after sunrise and an hour right before sunset when the sun is low in the sky. Well, I hit one of these with my main picture just as the sun was going down. The second shot in PiP was taken many hours after sunrise, and the difference in colour and light of the two is quite striking. The true colour of the stone is more like the main shot.

I love this style of architecture, Rosa. I love the way the light emphasizes the three-dimensionality of the building. I hope you are having a great weekend. Cheers, Joe

Thank you very much Joe. It was a great period for beautiful manor houses and very lucky if you could afford them. A good weekend for me Joe and I hope he same for you.

I agree, the light in the main picture is perfectly suitable for that building. And what an impressive building it is. Yet, the vibes that come across are slightly gloomy (not quite spooky, just a little perhaps). I have a thing about vibes of buildings...I believe I can tell if it's a "happy" building or a "gloomy" or "spooky" one...or even almost "threatening", a building that you absolutely don't want to enter because something terrible might have happened there. So I gave you my classification for this building (gloomy/spooky), lol, and since you've seen it in real life, you can tell me if you feel the same way or not ;-)

That's interesting Edna. I am also susceptible to "feelings" of a building. I think if you visited this one, you would find a very warm atmosphere, as I do in this one. As far as I am aware, nothing terrible has happened at Montacute House. It has been featured in many period films. If it looks gloomy or spooky, that is my fault for photographing it that way :-)) I have entered a house before and stepped straight back out, before I moved here and we were still viewing houses.

Oh, Rosa, how exciting! We seem to have quite a bit in common :-) I completely feel the same way you do about houses. And it has nothing to do with their looks...they may look really lovely at the first glance, but getting closer and going inside can make me shudder and shiver depending on the house. Whereas, on the other hand, run down buildings may have friendly and positive vibes. That's not a general rule, just an explanation that it has very little to do with the house's looks.

So yes, if Montacute House has a warm atmosphere in reality, then I'd sure feel it if I'd visit there. So you did an excellent job conveying a slightly gloomy mood in connection with that house...an atmosphere that doesn't exisit in reality but only in your photos. Are you related to Alfred Hitchcock, by any chance? ;-))

It was only when I returned home that I could see the huge difference in colour and light Jose Manuel. The PiP was taken on arrival to Montacute House and the main shot, just before leaving. Thank you for your great comments. Good evening and good weekend.

The light in the main photo is glorious, the whole house just seems to glow! The warm coloured stone adds to it, you can see that even in the "cooler" PiP. The early sunsets in late autumn gave you the ideal opportunity.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Gudrun club
The stone is of a beautiful natural light golden tone Gudrun, and that is what surprised me so much about the rather dull tones in the PiP. It really does show how the light and weather can react in a photograph. Thank you for your kind comments.

Yes you have caught the golden hour perfectly here, Rosa. It all looks so warm. No chance of the golden hour here today. It has been grey and drab all day. At least we got some heavy duty gardening done before the rain.

I love that honey-coloured stonework you get in your part of the country Rosa...........and the "golden hour" light has brought it out to fantastic effect in your main image. The detail is beautiful as well and I like the tree with some die-hard leaves clinging on to the branches.

In the PiP the house certainly doesn't look quite to beautiful, but it's still very impressive looking in the morning sunlight.

An excellent pair of shots!

An impressive and striking house. Well photographed. Surprising difference in the light here. I am aware of the "golden hour" but admit to not really paying too much attention to the possibilities. Very much like the warmth of the building during the "golden hour" and will be paying more attention in future :-) Thank you, Rosalyn.
Have a good Sunday.

You have experienced too, dear Rosa, what it means to "describe light" which is the essence of our common passion, namely photography. In the second image the building has an almost creepy look, the first one is very pleasant for the golden tones.
But ..... the important thing is what we want to describe and represent, so sometimes a low or too strong light can be good for the purpose we want to achieve.
Warm greetings
Fabio

The "golden hour" light gives a very special touch to this impressive and slightly gloomy building. The light does make the difference, that is the very essence of photography , i agree with Fabio.
