Clovelly, Devon.

Clovelly, Devon.
Clovelly, North Devon, is a fishing village known for its cobbled streets and small harbour. The village is built into a cleft in a 400ft (122m) high cliff and tumbles its way down past whitewashed cottages festooned with flowers to the tiny working port. It is famous for its donkeys, which traditionally carry goods up the hill; sledges bring things down. There are links with Charles Kingsley, Turner, Dickens.

Hi Rosa
I like these pictures very much!
They make a very pleasant composition
Fantastic colours too, especially for November.
I remember visiting there a very longtime ago, (well before digital cameras), and it certainly is very pretty! Can you imagine living there... You would be so fit after walking up that street every day!
Best Wishes, and stay safe!!

Hi Peter,
Thank you for your kind comments. I am pleased you like these pictures.
The weather was very good, considering in the morning it was very windy just along the coast. Clovelly is very sheltered I think. It would be a hard having to walk up that hill every day Peter, that's for sure!
Best wishes & take care,
Rosa.

Yes, the inhabitants of these fishing villages must have had a hard life Erich.

Thank you very much for your kind comments José Manuel Polo. The New Inn was possibly named when it was new many years ago. There is another pub/hotel at the bottom of the village called The Red Lion, next to the harbour. I will upload some pictures soon.
The cobbles are laid in such a way that it holds you quite firm. It would be advisable to wear flat shoes, for sure!
Take care and have a good weekend.

Clovelly is a lovely looking place Rosa. The cottages and steep street down to the sea and harbour remind me very much of Bay Town (Robin Hood's Bay) a few miles south of Whitby. The view across the water in your first shot is wonderful and the second is equally good, showing the steepness of the street and those pretty cottages as it does. Thanks for the interesting notes.

Enjoy your weekend, Doug

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
It is a quaint and lovely place Doug. I can imagine some of the Yorkshire fishing villages being similar. I am pleased that you like both shots. The view across the water is South Wales, which I'm sure you would have guessed. It was good to visit out of season with so few people about. It can get very busy in the summer.

Have a good weekend,
Rosa.

Two wonderful photos Rosa. You have a superb viewpoint in the first image and the view out to sea is gorgeous with the Welsh coast wreathed in hazy sunshine. Lovely detail in the houses (so I assume you've sorted out the focusing on your camera for good).

I especially the like PiP. It really gives us a feel of how well the village has been preserved. I love the steep cobbled streets and the lovely colours.

I visited Clovelly quite a few years ago..........I was surprised to find the village is privately owned and that we had to pay an entrance fee. Well worth it though.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thank you very much. Yes I think my camera is sorted now Keith, anything out of focus is now down to me!

Yes the village is privately owned but they are quite particular in keeping it a working village. I know a road where you can get in without paying, but it's not easy parking. There is also a Land Rover that will take anyone not capable of walking back up, that takes the other route....you just have to know it :-)

Thank you for your kind comments and I hope the rest of your weekend is enjoyable too.

A very scenic village that looks really beautiful in your images. I guess no traffic because of the hill and narrow streets,

Thank you George. Definitely no traffic. There is another narrow, steep road down to the small quay, suitable for light traffic.
