Charles Kingsley Museum ~ Clovelly

Charles Kingsley Museum ~ Clovelly
Kingsley Museum is where you’ll meet Charles Kingsley sitting at his desk. Charles Kingsley lived in the village as a child and returned many times as an adult. He stayed at what is now known as ‘Kingsley Cottage’ where he wrote ‘Westward Ho!’. Clovelly also inspired him to write ‘The Water Babies’. One of Kingsley’s most moving poems, ‘The Three Fishers’ is a poem of fishermen's wives waiting in vain for their husbands to return during a terrible storm. It is a stark reminder of the harsh realities faced by fishing communities. Here is a link to the poem put to music and sung by Dan Britton, a local man who lost family members in the tragedy.

Good morning Rosalyn although it's not a nice morning it snowed for a while but melted now. A lovely set of historic images very nicely captured, the Christmas cactus is flowering early, I hope you enjoy the rest of your day

Thank you Peter. It's rather cold here and there was a little flurry of snow when I went into town this morning. The bird table and feeders went over during the winds last night, but not much damage thankfully. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I hope it gets a bit warmer!!

Now I feel weak, my knees, you know !
After reading some pages concerning who he was...
Charles Kingsley was a broad church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet.
He was a friend and correspondent of Charles Darwin.
Kingsley sat on the 1866 Edward Eyre Defence Committee along with Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin, Charles Dickens, John Tyndall, and Alfred Tennyson, and received letters from Thomas Huxley discuting agnosticism.
I promise never again to play games with you.
Thanks for the lesson Rosalyn.

Ha! Well, I am impressed with your knowledge Jose!
I just add a snippet and hope that anyone interested will look into it further.
Charles Kingsley was a good and interesting character and there are some great
names amongst his friends! I am a big fan of Charles Dickens :-)
Take care and enjoy your weekend Jose.

You must be rich Rosa, as I was reminded the other day that our visit here some years back was well over £14 for the pair of us but i am sure you will say, like us, it was worth it. I think we went in this little museum too. Nice capture by the way.

Cheers, Herb

Ha ha, well I think it was £8 each. It is worth it but I don't like the visitor centre very much. I think it could be smaller and more in keeping with the old village. The first few times I visited Clovelly you could park and walk straight in and it was busy even then and buses were taking people there on day trips. Pleased you like these shots Herb, thank you.
Cheers, Rosa.

A delighful set of photos...............all beautifully exposed for the available light. It all looks very warm and cosy and it must have been a lovely place for Kingsley to work in.

A few things that caught my eye and which I particularly like.........the mannequin in the main image is very realistic. In the first PiP I like the yellow waterproofs hanging up and the Teddy Bear on the chair and in the second PiP I really like the view through the window. All such lovely details, which add to the charm of the museum.

An interesting link too. Thanks for sharing Rosa!

Being November, I was worried that this lovely little cottage museum would be closed, so I was very pleased to be able to visit it once more. Thank you for all your kind comments Keith.

When fewer people are visiting it does mean you can stand there longer and notice so much more. I agree with you about the mannequin, and I am pleased you also noticed the teddy bear :-))

Sunday greetings and good new week ahead.
