Rotterdam Kop van Zuid (#0120)
One of the widely acclaimed areas of new architecture in Rotterdam is Kop van Zuid, which is the area on the opposite bank in this picture and is connected to the older, central, Rotterdam by the architecturally acclaimed Erasmusbrug. Kop van Zuid is built on older, abandoned, port areas on the south side of the Nieuwe Maas, the body of water in front of me.
The building on the left side of the picture, past the bridge cables, is the Maastoren, which is the tallest building in the Netherlands. The building closer to the center with the wedge-shaped side is the KPN Tower (Toren op Zuid), designed by Renzo Piano (see en.rotterdam.info/locations/toren-op-zuid/).
Next to the KPN Tower is is the very large De Rotterdam building (largest in the Netherlands, 44 stories) designed by Koolhass. The building is three separate towers (with space between the towers, not visible here) connected to a lower 6 floor section; the towers include offices, a hotel, and apartments.
To the right of De Rotterdam and on the waterfront is the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal, behind the Cruise Terminal with a tan facade is the 46 story New Orleans, a residential building.
Not visible in this picture are a number of other architecturally interesting buildings in Kop van Zuid. I had hoped to explore the area more, but when I was in that area it was very windy and cold and I was having trouble figuring out the transit. I then got distracted by other parts of Rotterdam and didn’t make it back down to that area.
