The Binnenhaven, which translates simply to ‘inner port’ but is used in Rotterdam to refer to a specific one of the inner ports that were the original basis for Rotterdam becoming a shipping center. Based on various sources, it appears that this and nearby harbours were built in the later 1800’s but replaced as shipping centers after WWII and converted into housing areas when the older port areas were combined into the Kop van Zuid in the 1990’s.
