Raton, NM former Palace hotel (# 1132)
From outside the Amtrak Depot, looking west up Cook St. Unfortunately I didn’t know until later searching that there is a fair amount of information about the building on the left side of the picture. This is the Palace Hotel erected in 1896 by the Smith Brothers (their name is at the top). It was the first 3-story building in the county and is made of locally quarried sandstone. One thing I did not capture well was the frieze of alternating dark and light sandstone around the top. (Much of the previous is directly taken from: npgallery.nps.gov/pdfhost/docs/nrhp/text/77000923.pdf)
The majestic looking tall building on the left in the distance is the former Swastika Hotel, described in a separate picture (# 1134)
