El Centro former US Post Office (#0943)

El Centro former US Post Office (#0943)
This quite elegant building, in a very rough part of town (I was leary of leaving my car to take photos), is the former US Post Office. It was constructed in 1933/34 as a Public Works Administration (New Deal) project and closed in the 1970's. The style is described as Beaux Arts Classic; the building is one of two in Imperial County on the National Register of Historic Places, and (per sources) currently serves as a museum. Sources:

I admit, I often find myself succumbing to fears bred into me by the arbiters of conventional wisdom about certain neighborhoods, and it's a struggle at times to decide which fears are dumb and which are rational. I look at our move to Oak Park and the subsequent need to travel through the West Side as exposure therapy ... though I still get nervous when I have the camera.
