Los Algodones MX (#0927)

Los Algodones MX (#0927)
There are parts of Los Algodones that feel like the sorts of much further south Mexican towns that I've visited in the past. Such scenes evoke warm memories of relaxing over beer and long meals in cafes.

Clint, have particularly liked this photo

Many years ago (undergrad school, gasp!) we did some fieldwork in Baja, about 100 miles south of the border IIRC. I concluded then that the border is the seamy side of Mexico--tho perhaps, with the cartels, everywhere is now a lot seamier.

I suspect in the "old" days, we (Americans) contributed to the border towns being sleazy. When I was stationed in Texas in the late 60's, towns just over the boarder where were American servicemen (and other young men) went to get drunk and have sex. Similarly, Tijuana was the party place for So Cal teenagers (different drinking age) even into the late 1990's, and that was probably the case for Juarez.

No doubt that's part of it. But it also seemed that the local Mexicans were perfectly content where they were--they had no reason to try to go north.
