Yuma McPhaul suspension bridge (#0846)
Driving south on US 95 towards Yuma, you notice off in the distance a suspension bridge that seems to be out of place -- it looks to be unconnected to anything. It's the McPhaul suspension bridge crossing the Gila river, built in 1929 for US 95 (formerly the Yuma-Quartzite road). The bridge closed in 1967 when the highway was realigned. For some odd reason the bridge is referred to as the 'bridge to nowhere'. That label makes no sense, since a look at the map clearly indicates that it once handled major traffic.
