Oregon US 395 (#0099)

Oregon US 395 (#0099)
I took this originally to show what the high desert region of Oregon looks like, but soon after taking it I encountered my second major construction delay of the day. Earlier that day, in California, I'd been at one spot where traffic sat for about 20 minutes due to repaving a long stretch of highway. Here was the longest delay -- at about where the road begins to curve there was a flagman and traffic was stopped for about an hour -- which was actually good, an interesting opportunity to talk with others who had gotten out of their cars. This trip was right when there was debate in Washington over highway funding with the news reporting that states were putting maintenance on hold because of the uncertainty of federal funds -- well they definitely weren't putting construction on hold in this part of the west. Every day of the trip I had stretches of very slow or stopped traffic due to repaving or related work.

Similar debates are going on everywhere, I think. As bad off as Illinois is right now and as austere as our newish governor is trying to be, nobody's talking about cutting down on road construction. We'll completely eliminate public schools before we cut down on road construction.

Hmm.... gee, you think it has anything to do with teacher unions not contributing to his campaign and contractors contributing heavily. Nah, couldn't be anything corrupt like that!

Overdue in this part of Oregon, anyway! Just north of Valley Falls, near Lake Abert, there was a sign on US 395 saying "rough road." It's led to a family joke about "Oregon highway maintenance"--just put up a sign!
