Carson & Colorado narrow gauge car (#0045)

Carson & Colorado narrow gauge car (#0045)
Restoration of business car 10, built in 1896 for the Carson and Colorado railway. The C,arson and Colorado was a narrow gauge railway that ran down the Owens Valley from Nevada to Keeler, California. The car went through several remodelings and changes of ownership before being retired, as the Esmeralda, from the Owens Valley (then owned by Central Pacific) rail line in 1927.

Seen at Orange Empire Railway Museum.

Somewhere around I've got a little book on the Carson & Colorado. IIRC the SP ended up with the line, and the tracks weren't finally abandoned till the late 50s--surprisingly late.

There was also an SP line that came up to near Owens lake and my understanding was that there was a point where freight was switched from one to the other. I think the SP line was also used for filling the internment camp, though buses were used for the last few miles. Of course, given that LA stole the water from the Owens Valley, there wasn't exactly a lot of stuff to move up and down it once the aqueduct was built.
