Turn of the Century Graduation

14 Feb 2021 7 1 159
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: COLLEGE MEMORIES (Your own or someone else's.) My own college graduation doesn't make the cut-off for 1980 - and I've already posted them, anyway! This is a large of cardboard photo (cropped to show detail), and most likely a high school graduation rather than college, but it will have to do! Given to me by a library patron who is a builder and was given to him by owners of a barn renovation he worked on. Probably taken in Vermont. Interesting to see the African American woman - wish we know more about these exceptionally good looking graduates! I'm guessing this is the first decade of the 1900s, on the early side - looking at the dresses and hairstyles.

"F" for Frances

One last one uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: SOMETHING BEGINNING WITH "F". Frances, our next door neighbor on Woodlands Avenue in Rayleigh, Essex, England. Probably around 1959. School photo taken at Love Lane School, Rayleigh.

"F" for Flo, Flowers, and Fence

17 Jan 2018 4 1 108
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: SOMETHING BEGINNING WITH "F". Our neighbors' grandparents- Ted and "Flo" behind the "flowers". Behind the fence is the house I grew up in, in England. In fact, that's my bedroom with the open window - perhaps I was in there playing with my dolls!

May Illingworth, Springfield, VT - June 2, 1917

04 Feb 2021 6 4 137
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: KIDS ON HORSES My husband's aunt, May Illingworth, who was eleven years older than his mother, Joan. May always went by the name of "Jill" as an adult. Her gloomy face is prophetic - she didn't have a very happy life, although she was the apple of her mother's eyes at this point in time.

The Visitors Have Arrived

31 Jan 2021 5 2 113
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: WAITING My family are the visitors and we've just arrived at the Brown's house in Fairfield,CT from New Haven CT, 1968. We had emigrated from England with them in 1964. Here they are "waiting" for us to get out of the car, as we drive into their driveway and I snap a photo of them out the car window on my Polaroid Swinger. Auntie Vera and Uncle Maurice, Ruth and Frances in the doorway, and little Helen, perhaps inside taking a nap.

Entrance to the Wolverton Hotel

Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: SIGNS I groaned when I saw this theme, because I remembered that I'd had a hard time finding anything for it last time! It didn't get easier, and this was the only sort of uninteresting example I could find. : ) What type of uniform is Ken wearing, I wonder? From an album given to me by a library patron. Written on the back: Canton, Oklahoma May 14, 1946 Taken outside the hotel we stayed in. Jeanie's husband Ken, Jean, Erma & Bill

Lunch Atop a Skyscraper With Bernie.

22 Jan 2021 6 8 122
My new desktop picture and my very favorite Bernie meme from the countless ones created from the inauguration photo. He is the best - love him!! The original photograph is called "Lunch Atop A Skyscraper " and was taken by an unknown photographer as a publicity shot in 1932. If anyone knows who did the Bernie tweak, I'd love to credit her or him. The photographer that took the photo of Bernie is (I believe) an artist on Instagram named Birdie Hall.

First Grade Class Picture c. 1920

17 Jan 2021 4 1 153
Uploaded (Yay!) for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: "HANDS". Apparently, the children have been instructed to place their folded hands on the desk for the class picture. As in many of the vintage class photos, the teacher looks joyless and the kids look fearful. This is a photo, one of a group I bought from a local woman on Craiglist, Her Uncle is in the photo. I think he's the 2nd child back on the right. His name was Carlyle. This is in NY - possibly Brooklyn. Viewing large is much better for this one.

Ivy Earp

Brought forward, at Alan's suggestion, for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of "ALREADY UPLOADED - ANYTHING GOES! Originally brought forward for the Vintage Photo Theme Park theme of "Flappers". The cloche hat seems to be figuring very prominently! Ivy's brother, Edwin (Charlie) Earp, emigrated to Australia in the early 1920's and this picture was sent out from England. This was sent to me by my second cousin in Australia, Erin Hobson (met online) along with many other wonderful photos. Ivy was my mother's first cousin.

Vintage College Play?

10 Oct 2010 6 2 219
Brought forward, at Alan's suggestion, for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of "ALREADY UPLOADED - ANYTHING GOES! The nervous looking "baby" is holding a Teddy Bear. What is the maid holding? Found in South Burlington, Vermont. It's a small snapshot 21/4 by 31/4. I'm guessing this is between 1914 and 1920. I wish I could say there was an explanation on the back.

Cutie in the Window

27 Dec 2008 6 2 292
Brought forward, at Alan's suggestion, for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of "ALREADY UPLOADED - ANYTHING GOES!" Purchased in Middlebury, Vermont, about 1998. It came in a very pretty blue glass art deco frame but I had a relative I wanted to put in there so... out she came! I think the frame and the picture together were $8. Good deal. There are no identifying notes.

Self-Possessed Girl with Enormous Bow

26 Dec 2008 10 1 297
Brought forward, at Alan's suggestion, for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of "ALREADY UPLOADED - ANYTHING GOES!" Choosing to ignore that ridiculous thing on her head. She looks slightly amused with the world and very composed and self-assured for one so young. Printed on the back: Poist (Feeser's Studio) 24 E. Middle Street Hanover, PA

Bad Hair Day Baby

26 Dec 2008 3 2 378
Brought forward, at Alan's suggestion, for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of "ALREADY UPLOADED - ANYTHING GOES!" Those tufts! What were they thinking? The poor baby was already as homely as they come. This is an example of a "hidden mother" photo as you can see the arm and hand curved around the baby but otherwise, apart for a glimpse of dress, she is hidden. Purchased in Vergennes, Vermont. There's a torn off two cent stamp on the back even though it's not a postcard. It looks like it might be a George Washington stamp. Assuming it was put on close to the time it was taken, what time frame is that?
