Long Beach, California

Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: AT THE AMUSEMENT PARK A little license here allows me to post a new photo and not another "brought forward". This is actually Long Beach but with rides in the background - so I used it. Written on the back: Taken at Long Beach, California Thursday, May 19th, 1924. This picture is not very good. [And in another hand...] Mrs. Searles and daughter Jessie.

First School Photo - 1959

Brought forward for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: SCHOOL DAYS I forget what they call Kindergarten in England but this was it for me, although it used to be that, after turning 5, you could enter either in September or after Easter break - and I started in April so only had until then to mid July for my Kindergarten experience. It's interesting to me to see that little tuft of white hair over my ear. My mother had the same white tuft as did my eldest son. Now, of course, if I still had it it would be lost in my totally white hair!

I can't remember the name of it. Anyone know? I've just transplanted it to another spot in the garden. I hope it does well there...

Chester, Vermont Family

Brought forward from the Halkard/Grimshaw album for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: THREE IN THE FRONT, TWO IN THE BACK. Photograph taken at the Wellman Studio, Chester , Vermont. This is a portrait in a family album (my husband's side) but we have no information about who they are. And well, if I'd have known how hard this theme was going to be for me, I probably would never have suggested it! In my mind I had many photographs that would fit the theme - in reality I had about a million variations of groups with NONE of them fitting the bill. So...it's a "reprint". This is a cropped Cabinet Card. The original is incredibly faded and when I went to re-edit it, I found that this was the best reproduction. Plus, at this point, I figured I had spent way more than enough time on the theme. : D

Asleep on an English Beach

Uploaded for the vintage Photos theme Park theme of : ASLEEP The last time we had this theme I wrote that after exhaustive searching I had only found two examples in my collection. I used the other one back then (of me asleep as a baby) and didn't use this one because of the quality. Now, thanks to a better editing tool, I'm using it! Not perfect, but it's all I have. This is my Uncle Les Taylor, asleep on the beach at Jaywick, Clacton, Essex, 1949 - knitted waistcoat, jacket, and all. Looking at the other photos taken there, this appeared to be a sweet little holiday town. it has been referred to more recently as "the most deprived village in England."

Gretchen and Clyde, 1962

Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: HOLDING HANDS Surprisingly, I found this theme difficult! I had numerous examples of arms slung over shoulders, arms linked, etc. but only found two, not previously uploaded, showing hand holding. This one was given to me by a library patron. I believe "Gretchen" was a German immigrant. Written on the back: 1/31/62 Dear Lillian, Here's a nice one of my mother, "Gretchen" - no doubt Marguerite to you. Lee - she is smiling at you! The Solitary Playgrounder

12 Jul 2022 3 2 121
Re-scanned for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: PLAYGROUNDS Lloyd Park playground, Walthamstow, London. This is late February or early March 1956. I'm almost two and soon my brother will be born. I don't know what you call this thing but like all playground equipment of the time in Britain, you took your life in your hands when using it. This thing had extraordinarily heavy ropes that, if you didn't run fast enough, hit you hard on the head with multiple ropes hitting you after the first hard whack. So much fun to get airborne, though! Another few examples below.

Garden Pride

27 Jun 2022 3 2 122
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: GARDENING This gentle faced woman is pointing with delight at (I think) her tomato plant. I can relate. This year, I have spent more time in my garden than ever before - digging new beds (asparagus and potatoes,) weeding, creating new paths - and trying for a little while to turn my brain away from the increasing right wing fascism in this country ...and the world. So many of my generation thought it would be really different. : ( but the men march on. Below is another "in the garden" photo. Not very good quality, but still the pleasure and pride of gardening shows.

Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: BIRDHOUSES, DOGHOUSES, OUTHOUSES, ETC. An "outhouse" in the United States refers to a primitive toilet - a plank with a hole cut in it to sit on situated over a deep hole. A postcard sent to my husband's grandfather in Springfield, Vermont from a young colleague who had recently joined the army and was stationed in Alabama. The date stamp is Aug. 18, 1944. Hi ILLIE: I'm feeling fine and hope the same for you. I've been down here for weeks. Weather down here is plenty warm. How is everything going at the shop? Charlie

This airfield was in Long Island and was the airfield where Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart (among others) launched their famous flights.
