Franz Eppich by Gertinger
Franz Eppich (1835-1893); Austrian tenor.
In 1851 he made his debut at the "Deutschen Theater von Budapest" as Barbarino in Von Flotow's "Alessandro Stradella". Until 1856 he remained at Budapest. In the following years he was engaged at Krakau (1856/57), Graz (1857/61), Frankfurt (1861/62) and Graz again (1862/66). In 1866 he was engaged by the "Wiener Carl-Theater" where his career as a successful operetta singer started. In 1866 he sang at the première of Von Suppé's "Leichte Kavallerie". In 1877 he sang at the première of "Prinz Methusalem" by Johann Strauss. He remained at the Carl-Theater until 1882. From 1882-1893 he continued his operetta career at the "Theater an der Wien". Here he sang at the premières of "Der Bettelstudent" (1882) and "Der Zigeunerbaron" (1885). His last performance was in 1891; he became increasingly ill and died in mental illness. His older brother Joseph Eppich was also a well known singer.
