Whitby ~ North Yorkshire

Back to Whitby today, where there are many jewellers selling Whitby Jet jewellery. Jet is a semi-precious gemstone made from decaying wood under extreme pressure. It's a type of coal-substance that washes up on the beaches of Whitby and also found in the North York Moors that's approximately 182 million years. Jet has also been found in Kimmeridge shale seams in Dorset.

The giant herring suspended above the shop is an installation on the heritage trail by Whitby artist Emma Stothard.

The old shop fronts are fabulous and that herring looks good too!
I have two pairs of jet earrings, strangely enough not bought in Whitby but in a second had shop on Guernsey;-)
