Whitby ~ North Yorkshire

Back to Whitby today, where there are many jewellers selling Whitby Jet jewellery. Jet is a semi-precious gemstone made from decaying wood under extreme pressure. It's a type of coal-substance that washes up on the beaches of Whitby and also found in the North York Moors that's approximately 182 million years. Jet has also been found in Kimmeridge shale seams in Dorset.

The giant herring suspended above the shop is an installation on the heritage trail by Whitby artist Emma Stothard.

There were some beautiful pieces of jewellery in there Keith. I only ever wear a watch, so no point me buying any, but I could admire it. Thank you for your kind comments.
